What you can do when you are supposed to be studying

7 billion people and you: What's your number?

The world's population is expected to hit seven billion in the next few weeks. After growing very slowly for most of human history, the number of people on Earth has more than doubled in the last 50 years. Where do you fit into this story of human life? Fill in your date of birth below to find out.
You are 22, female and living in Sweden
You were the 5,230,078,393rd person
Sweden
Your country's population is 9,379,687
Your life expectancy is 82.9 years
What's next? The global population will continue to increase during your lifetime, reaching 10 billion by 2083. However, the rate of growth is expected to slow. Little of the current growth is happening in developed countries like yours.
Young people: The world's population is young, like you. Under-25s make up 43% of the global population, but they make up 60% of the world's least-developed countries. Women in your area can expect to have one or two children.
Battle for resources: It is estimated that your group of the richest countries consumes double the resources used by the rest of the world. The UN estimates that if current population and consumption trends continue, by the 2030s we will need the equivalent of two Earths to support us.
Did you know? A total of 6.1 trillion text messages were sent in 2010. That's 200,000 messages every second.
644 people
the amount the population has grown while you've been on this site

Snail speed

It is not going very fast today, not at all. I have to do one home exam and two seminar assignments before Monday and its a lot of work. I can´t say I am the best person to study and nor am I very fast. I desired to stayed at home today,  I had to keep the cat company, but tomorrow I think I have to go to the library for sure, it is impossible to be disciplined at home. Poor cat is happy that I´m home though, but sad that I am studying. She wants to go out and play so desperately.... Maybe the cat isn´t the most interesting topic one can think of, but then you don´t know my cat.... Jokes aside it i sometimes wish me and my cat could change lives for one day, I mean I do believe that it wouldn't be that bad to spend the day on the couch. Then again I think I would get bored and above all I would not like to wash myself with my tongue , especially not after going to the litter. No, thanks...! Maybe the life of a student is the right one for me anyway, at least if  the choice is between a cat´s and a student´s.  A student hang out a lot on the couch anyway!

Landskap!

Important!

The "Landskap" is the nation's big meetings which
take place six times a year. At the Landskap, we elect people for the different positions within the nation and make decisions about big issues. Each member has one vote. Afterwards, there will be dinner for the humble price of SEK 50, or free if you are a "recce" (new student)! Don't forget to bring your nation card and a photo ID.

Did you know?

Yesterday´s big headline was that  the dictator of Libya for 20 years , Qaddafi, got killed. Finally, they say. In the States the big headlines are all about  the "Occupy Wall street" movement and in France it is about the next election. What about Sweden? Do you know what is happening here right now, the country that you are living in? I know it is hard yo keep up with the Swedish news, especially since it is a lot  in Swedish and that it is about all these people that most people not born in Sweden don´t have a clue who they are. Therefore I thought I would update you a little bit, try to help out a little, little bit.

The main headlines these past weeks in Sweden have been about this:
Carl Bildt
  1. Two Swedish journalists are imprisoned in Ethopia waiting for a trial. They are accused 1. Being in the country without permit to,  2. Cooperating with  terrorist in Ethiopia.
  2. The Swedish foreign minister ,Carl Bildt, used to be a part of the board of the company Lundin petroleum that is being criticized for its involvement in different crimes against humanity countries like Sudan and Ethiopia. Now Bildt is also accused of being biast in the legal question about the Swedish journalist in Ethiopia. He have said things as : " We told people that Ethiopia was a dangerous country were one should not travel."
  3. The newly elected leader of the Sweden's biggest party, the Social democrats, have cheated with the grant money from the government,  something that goes against the law but also the party´s ideology.
  4. Doctor being accused of  killing a child some years ago when giving the child to much pain killers.

Samlingen

The headline is in Swedish and translates to:  the collection or the group. It can refer either to a collection of things ( for example stamps) or a collection of people, like a group.  Samlingen is also the name of the group of DJs that will be hosting at Uplands nation on Friday.  The club is called Samlingen residency and on Friday it is the premier! Samlingen is well known and I have been to several of their clubs trough the years that they been active and I must say that they are not that bad! I havn´t really decided if I´m going this weekend since I´m hosting a dinner at my place. Luckily the club is open until 2:00 AM so I have plenty of time to get there if I wish to go. WOOT!

Grey day?

Pink, black and purple, that is the colors of my pens! When you have a lot to do and to study and when the texts that you are reading is so slow that you are wondering if it ever going to end, then some nice pens can make the work easier , or st leas more colorful in this gray whether... At least it helps me

Today´s annoying sentence

".. distinguishing between models that emphasize formal structural aspects of political openings
and  those that   emphasize the perceptual elements of opportunity"

Say what!

Sometimes it is really hard to wrap your head around the things that you learn at uni, don´t you agree?

Your international secretary

UF lectue?

A lot to study again, two courses at the same time. But for those that feel like you havn´t got enough lectures to go to I would recommend you to go to UF´s lecture about South Sudan today at 1915 in the main building of uni. It cost 30 kronor and UF´s lectures are usually really interesting. I think they are arranging a trip to Egypt as well for those that is interested in travelling to new and fascinating places.

The day after the international gasque...

The headline make me think of a official holiday, like for example "the day after Christmas eve" which is the Christmas day off course. Maybe, it is only me who make that association... who knows? Any how, the gasque was a blast! I had pretty fair seat and I could see the stage very well. The food was good and for once I got full on a gasque, impressive, don´t you think? What was served was reindeer and moose just like last year but in a different shape. It was delicious. I think that the international gasque has the best food of all gasques i have been to, and trust me, that is a a lot!.
It is hard to say what the best part of the gasque was since is was all so good, but if  I had to make a top 5 this would be the list:
  1. The samba band
  2. The karaoke
  3. The after party
  4. The men coir
  5. The photo booth
I´m so sorry for the lack of photos but my camera failed me last night...

Shopping in Sweden

OH! It just hit me the other day, maybe some of you would be interested in where one can buy cheap and Swedish cloths? I know you probably seen all the stores in town, but besides the obvious physical stores we have some internet stores that are really popular and easy to buy from. I would like recommend my personal favourit Nelly. This site has both women and men cloths and they have something for all valets. I would go so far to say that it is perfect for shopping a not to expensive gasque dress. Second we have Bubbleroom  that have a similar concept as Nelly. For those who might not appreciate the two previous suggestions we have Modegallerian and for theone with a little more mature taste; halens.
Looking for outlet? Here is the answer: outletsverige!
I hope I gave you some suggestions of stores you did not know of and that you find something you like!
See you at the International gasque!

Pics of TALLINN and ST PETERSBURG

The culture capital of Russia

Ok, I admit, I have done the most forbidden thing in the blog world, I have taken a break in my blogging, not ok! I´m back now, though and I hope you can forgive me with in time. To defend myself I can tell you that I did it for a good cause. I was experiencing the exchange student life in all it´s awesomeness. How? you might ask. Well, my patience readers, I will tell you all about it.
Last Saturday I prepared myself to go to the a place I never imagine I would travel to even in my wildest dreams. At least not before my retirement. I was going to St Petersburg, Russia! That is not any place, but the country that used to be a great empire back in the days AND the country that was the Soviet Union for a great part of the 20th century. Russia is the most "different" country I been to, so far.
BUT, it was not only St Petersburg that was the destination last week, the trip I was going on was arranged by a company called Scanbalt that arranges round trips for students. The scheduled was to go over night to by boat to Tallinn, the capital in Estonia, stay there for a day and then continue by boat to St Petersburg, arriving 6 AM Swedish time. Then we had three days in the cold, rainy but glorious city before we took the ferry to Helsinki, Finland. After staying there for the day we went on board on the ferry to complete our  journey back home  to Stockholm. It was magnificent, St Petersburg is such a differnt city and the people there is charming in their own russian way. I would love to go back, but also to visit Moscow and the countryside to compare it with the culture capital of Russia.
Unfortunately my camera died the second day and therefor I only have some pictures, but hopefully I to put up the pictures that my friend took. Until then you have to be satisfied with my pics.
